Nanuk 935 Review: The Carry-On Hard Case We Trust With Our Gear

The Nanuk 935 in orange is how we move camera bodies, lenses and audio gear from studio to set. Here's how it has held up and what it can and can't carry.

The Nanuk 935 is a wheeled, carry-on-size hard case with a waterproof resin shell. Ours is orange with padded dividers, and it's how we move camera bodies, lenses and audio gear between the studio and set. It's tough, easy to roll and easy to spot, and after nearly two years of production use it's the case we'd recommend for anyone moving a camera kit by car or plane.

Quick verdict

A dependable, well-built case that protects a camera-and-lens or audio kit in transit and rolls easily. It's sized for carry-on, so it holds a focused kit, not everything you own.

  • Best for: a camera body and lenses, or an audio kit, that needs real protection by car or as airline carry-on.
  • Skip it if: you want lights, stands or a multi-camera kit in a single case. Nanuk makes larger wheeled models for that.

What it is

The 935 measures 22 x 14 x 9 inches outside, which Nanuk lists as carry-on size for most airlines. Inside it's about 20.5 x 11.3 x 7.5 inches (28.5 liters), and it weighs 11.6 lb empty.

The shell is Nanuk's NK-7 resin, rated IP67 for dust and water, with an automatic pressure-release valve. Nanuk lists immersion, drop and impact testing for it, including MIL-STD-810F immersion and ATA 300 Category 1. The lid closes with Nanuk's PowerClaw latches, the case rolls on polyurethane wheels with a two-stage retractable handle, and it's covered by a lifetime limited warranty.

You can order it with cubed foam or with the padded dividers we use, in several colors including orange.

Why we chose it

Production transport is hard on gear: early car loads, rough parking lots and loading docks, rushed handoffs between crew, and the occasional outdoor setup in bad weather. Every bump is a chance to break something expensive. We wanted a case that could take that, with an interior we could reconfigure between shoots, since one day it holds lenses and the next it holds wireless audio and a monitor.

We tried several options over the years before standardizing on the 935. The orange was a practical choice too. On a busy set full of black cases and bags, we can find ours from across the room.

How it has held up

We've used the 935 for the better part of two years. It has been through rain, heat waves and more parking-garage ramps than we can count, and it hasn't let us down.

The padded dividers keep gear separated and cushioned. We've set them up for a set of prime lenses one week and a camera body, monitor and wireless transmitter the next. The hook-and-loop dividers stay put in transit and are easy to rearrange.

The wheels roll smoothly on concrete and asphalt, and the handle locks at a comfortable height. Crossing a big lot with a loaded case, that makes a real difference.

What we like

  • IP67 waterproof and dustproof shell
  • PowerClaw latches that close securely and won't pop open
  • Padded dividers you can rearrange for each shoot
  • Wheels and retractable handle that make it easy to move loaded
  • Carry-on size for most airlines
  • Orange shell that's easy to spot on a crowded set
  • Lifetime limited warranty

What to know

  • Weight adds up: 11.6 lb empty, and noticeably more once it's full of bodies and glass. The wheels help, but stairs are a real lift.
  • Capacity is carry-on sized. Great for a focused kit; for lights, stands or a full multi-camera package you'll want a larger case.
  • Check your airline. Carry-on limits vary, and spare lithium batteries have to fly in the cabin, not checked bags.

If you fly with V-mount batteries, our SmallRig V-mount review covers the airline rules. For smaller kits and everyday carry, see our guide to camera bags.

Bottom line

The Nanuk 935 is one of the most dependable non-camera pieces of gear we own. The IP67 shell and PowerClaw latches protect what's inside, the wheels and handle make it practical on real production days, and the orange shell means we never lose track of it. If you need a carry-on-size case for a camera or audio kit, this is the one we'd buy again.
